Joe Kuykendall is a well
established musician in the Little Rock area. He has been playing music
on a variety of instruments for most of his life. His musical career spans
over four decades. He began playing drums at age 14, and by age 17 had settled
on guitar as his primary instrument.
After playing in various rock bands thru his teens
and early twenties, Joe toured with a Bluegrass band for a number of years.
He eventually auditioned for a tour with Vince Gill, and was offered the
job!
He played in a local jazz band for six years, and has performed as a soloist,
as well as in duets, playing for all types of events, including weddings,
corporate affairs, private parties, etc.
His career also includes a six year gig with a
local church as an Associate Music Minister & Band Director. During
his stint with the church, he also directed a live music venue in downtown
Little Rock. He is also an accomplished songwriter, and for a number of
years owned and operated a recording studio.
He began teaching professionally in 1994. He taught
five years at Stonehenge Music in NLR, three years at Starr's Guitars in
the Rivermarket, and most recently taught at Sigler Music Center until their
closing in November 2007.
Joe teaches Guitar (all styles reading &
improvisation) and Bass Guitar (reading & improvisation).
He developed and teaches an instructional method for Mandolin which incorporates
music theory into the process of learning to play mandolin. He has also
taught Harmonica, Dobro, Violin, Slack Key & Slide Guitar methods, as
well as music theory.
Joe teaches all ages, from beginner to the advanced
musician. He also conducts guitar workshops that teach scales, modes, chord
structure and improvisation. He is currently serving as an instrumentalist
(guitar) at both campuses of New Life Church, in Maumelle and Conway, Arkansas.
